Protect Yourself Against Fraudulent Callers
Scammers are increasingly targeting individuals and businesses with fraudulent calls, attempting to steal information or gain access to their computers and online banking accounts. Stay vigilant and protect yourself by following these guidelines.
Recognize the Signs of Fraudulent Calls:
- Urgent or Threatening Language: Fraudsters often create a sense of urgency or fear to pressure you into acting quickly. Often, they will say they spotted fraud on one of your accounts and your money is not safe.
- Requests for Sensitive Information: No bank will ever ask for your full passwords, PINs, or Social Security Number over the phone. However, scammers will try to trick you into revealing sensitive information.
- Suspicious Payment Instructions: Be wary if asked to transfer funds, convert to bitcoin, buy gift cards, or provide access to your online banking account.
- Claims of Computer or Account Issues: Scammers may pretend to offer tech support and request remote access to your devices.
How to Protect Yourself:
- Hang Up and Verify: Ask for the caller’s name, department, and reason for contacting you. Then hang up and call your bank using the official number on your account statement, account paperwork, or the bank’s website.
- Do Not Share Personal Information: Never disclose sensitive details like passwords, PINs, or account numbers during unsolicited calls.
- Reject Unfamiliar Links or Requests: Avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments sent by unexpected sources.
- Use Call Blocking Features: Activate call screening or blocking features on your phone to avoid spam calls.
- Monitor Your Account Activity: Review your account statements and check your account balance and activity regularly. Doing so can alert you to suspicious or fraudulent activity in your account.
What to Do If You Suspect Fraud Has Occurred:
- Notify Your Bank: If you suspect fraud or believe you shared information with a scammer, contact your bank immediately.
- Immediately report any suspicious activity or unauthorized transactions. Your bank will take action to help secure your accounts and investigate the issue.
- Close Affected Accounts: Close any accounts that have unauthorized activity or have been opened fraudulently and request new account numbers and cards.
